 Deadline: 28 June 2026
 Description:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The recent cessation of conflict in Sudan has resulted in a significant movement of returnees back to Khartoum
State, where communities are attempting to re--establish their lives after extensive damage caused by the fighting.
IDPs, returnees, and vulnerable host community members are returning to areas with severely compromised
infrastructure and limited access to basic services. Among the most critical needs is access to safe and reliable
water, alongside healthcare, food, and adequate shelter, all of which are essential for recovery and reintegration.
Water supply systems Across Khartoum State have been heavily affected by the conflict, with many boreholes
damaged, non-functional, or due to fuel deficit, lootings of electric generators. As a result, households, especially
women and children, are forced to rely on unsafe water sources and higher prices or travel long distances to collect
water, increasing health risks and exposure to protection concerns. The rehabilitation and solarization of Solar Hup
boreholes presents a sustainable solution to restore water access, reduce operational costs, and ensure consistent
water supply even in contexts of fuel scarcity and insecurity
Sudan Zero Waste Organization (SZWO) is a national, youth-led Sudanese NGO established in 2020, working

sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and food security programs.
The partnership between SZWO and MEDAIR combines strong local presence and contextual understanding
with international technical expertise and operational experience, enabling effective delivery of water borehole
rehabilitation and solarization interventions to address urgent water needs for IDPs, returnees, and vulnerable
host communities across Khartoum Locality, Khartoum State.
